Collection of wrought-iron heart trivets. Early to mid-19th century Raised on feet, these iron heart-shaped trivets were designed to prevent a hot iron from scorching furniture or floorboards. Though the heart was both an evocative and creative design choice, it was also among the most practical shapes for a stove-heated sad iron (sad was an early term for solid). In the nineteenth century, ironing clothing was a hot and arduous task, requiring such trivets to keep at least two irons in play one in hand and one heating up. The collection of rare trivets displays well on a shelf or tabletop, but could also be wall-mounted. Condition Very good antique condition. Measurements 5 1/2 to 8 1/4 " long,1 1/8 to 2 1/8 " high.
