1) Walt Whitman (1819-1892). An envelope, addressed in his hand to "Thomas Nichelson [c]are of Dr R M Bucke Asylum London Ontario Canada". His postal return address stamp at bottom. H 3" W 5-1/2". Condition: Tear at left side done at opening. Soiled and wrinkled a bit. 2) Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909). Small note to an unnamed recipient. 1 October, 1889. Full signature. Two seemingly opposing quotes. H 6-1/2" W 4-1/2". Condition: Tiny chip and tiny tear at bottom. Slight age darkened edges. 3) Washington Irving (1783-1859) A one page autograph letter (of a bifolium), undated (ca. 1831), signed "WI". To an unnamed recipient. Irving has "misplaced the sketches of which I spoke to you this morning..." H 7-1/4" W 4-1/2". Condition: Excellent condition. 4) Bret Harte (1836-1902) American Short Story writer. A small autograph letter to his Publisher, Mr. Osgood. A fine full signature and an initialed P.S. H 6-1/2" W 4-1/4". Condition: Excellent condition. Very light tape residue in two tiny spots on the back. Light folds. 5) William D. Howells (1837-1920) Novelist, Critic, Playwright. A small 2 pp (as pp1 and 4 of a bifolium) autograph letter dated Jan. 14,1890 to a Mr. Palmer. H 7" W 4-1/2". Condition: Some stains along the inner margin of p4 and one 1" tear in the middle of the inner margin, where the letter was excised from an album affecting 3 letters. Otherwise excellent condition. 6) Henry Rogers (1806-1877) Christian Apologist, writer. An interesting Reward of Merit to Miss Maria Moore, all in a calligraphic gothic style. In the center is a dime sized circle with the Lord's Prayer in tiny script. Though not autographed, Rogers has written his name twice. Pasted to a 5" x 7" sheet. H 2-1/2" W 6-1/4". Condition: Top has been trimmed, affecting the tops of some letters. Otherwise fine condition, with stains, folds and edge tears commensurate with age (ca. 1830). 7) Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) A Ticknor and Fields check from The Central National Bank of the City of New York payable to Bayard Taylor for $289.27. Signed on the back by Taylor. H 2-3/4" W 7". Condition: Cancellation punch out and X slits. Very fine.
