ÒWelcome Little InnocentÓ satin pincushion layette dated 1837 Also known as christening pillows or layettes, pincushions such as this example were customary gifts to new mothers and bear sentiments written in pins. The superstitious would gift the pillows only after the baby was born as some believed pins would increase the pains of childbirth. ÒFor every pin a painÓ and ÒMore pins, more painÓ were once common sayings. For wealthy mothers, gifted layettes were often made of expensive material such as imported silk, as is the case here. This example remains in a remarkable state of preservation, not only retaining the pins, but with its ivory-colored satin intact and essentially unblemished. The contrasting elements in the object give the piece a sensual quality seemingly at odds with its motto. An ornamental status symbol for a new mother, the luxurious silken and supple satin pillow is stuffed plump and pierced by pins, evoking a decadent, less-than-innocent feeling. The pillow seems to usher in the loss of innocence as it welcomes an innocent into the world. Condition Very good antique condition with minor discolorations. Measurements Approximately 12 inches long. US Shipping $20 insured Courtesy of Old As Adam Antiques oldasadam.com
