Intricate scrimshaw carved bone with seven whaling vessels and a steamship, dated 1838. Inscribed in central area 'A SEA HORSE TAKEN IN THE RED SEA A.D. 1838'. Below scenic depictions of palm trees, is a man riding a horse, bird and elephant. Central area includes an eagle holding an American shield, camel, two horses, dog, followed by man in corner shooting with rifle at three birds in flight. On flat reverse side; from left to right, sun above three birds in sky, three whaling skiffs with men and harpoons fishing for whales. In the middle a whaling ship with a lighthouse in the distance, an eagle with spread wings holding a shield, and two women holding American flags under the eagle. Condition: Fine original condition.
