Marc J. Matz has been a prominent antiques dealer for over forty years, specializing in works of art from the China Trade, Colonial India, the Dutch East Indies, Japanese Export, and Southeast Asia. Many pieces have passed from his hands to major museums and private collectors. This magnificent single-owner estate collection showcases outstanding examples of the decorative arts from his wide range of interests, including paintings, silver, furniture, Buddhist sculpture, as well as an outstanding collection of Chinese Bencharong porcelain.

Lamqua (fl. 1825-1860), attributed, Canton, ca. 1840.  China Trade Portrait of a Hong Merchant. A distinctive work by the most significant Chinese portrait artist of his day. Oil on canvas, framed.

Condition: Excellent original condition.

H 30-1/8 in. W 22 in.

Provenance: Lamqua (Guan Qiaochang), thought to be the son of Spoilum, was the most notable of the Canton artists of the first half of the Nineteenth Century. He occupied a studio on China Street, where he painted oil portraits of Western and Chinese sitters, including the most significant hong merchants involved in the China Trade. A closely related Lamqua portrait titled: Young Bespectacled Man (assession no. A-PO1998-000091)is in the collection of the Macao  Museum of Art. A Lamqua portrait of ‘Chinese Merchant,’ from the Martin Gregory Collection, was sold at Bonham’s London, November 7, 2024, lot 162.

New England Auctions does not ship or arrange shipping. 
All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

 


Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
