Foeiqua (fl. 1800-1825) attributed, Canton, ca. 1815. Rare China Trade portrait of the Boston Ship Captain John Fenno (1779 -1820).  Oil on canvas, in original gilt-carved frame.

H 27 in. W 20 in.

Provenance: The subject of this portrait,, was the son of Samuel Fenno, who was notably one of the Boston patriots who participated in the Boston Tea Party.  Captain John Fenno was active in the China Trade for many years. His final voyage to East Asia, which commenced in 1819, was on the ship Liverpool. Fenno died the following year in Manila, in the Philippines. A copy of the ship’s log for that voyage, is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. A very similar Foeiqua portrait of the New Bedford ship master, Beriah Fitch, painted circa 1818, is in the collection of the San Diego Historical Society, and illustrated in Michael A. Jehle’s: From Brant Point to the Boca Tigris - Nantucket and the China Trade, Nantucket Historical Association, 1994, color plate xxvi and  p. 88, Fig. 56.

Condition: Relined. Inspected under UV light. Minor scattered in-painting.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

 


Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
