Fernand Léger (1881-1955), Untitled painting of nude woman looking at the viewer. Signed in LL corner. Gouache on paper. French, circa 1948.
Fernand Léger was a French sculptor and artist known for his style of blending human and machine. Léger had emerged from his experience as a combat engineer in the French army during World War I with a purpose of reconciling man and machine in the modern era. Many of his early pieces show a human figure seamlessly incorporated into a machine-like background. However, as the 1920s began he wanted to rebuild the human form he had previously simplified. This woman's stare at the viewer and seeming hesitation with her arm moved across her body humanize her. The bright, simple background highlight this humanity and create a complexity not seen within the human forms of his earlier work. Léger currently has pieces on display in the Met and the MoMA and has exhibited internationally.
