An archive spanning the years 1943-1945 (and some clippings into the 1950's) for Vice Admiral John S. McCain (Senator John McCain"s Grandfather). Includes approximately 80 b/w photos of McCain and other officers and events of the period. There is a fine black pebble leather USN issue belt, with a fine brass buckle and clip with USN insignia, gold thread decoration and two brass clips and straps. There is a notebook devoted to the USS Bon Homme Richard, launched Ap. 29, 1944 and commissioned Nov. 26, 1944 (sponsored by Mrs. McCain). Includes a navy issue steel belt buckle for the "USS Bonhomme Richard LHD 6". Of special interest is a Japanese war medal in its original case given to a Japanese soldier for service against China. The accompanying documentation indicates that McCain was sent the medal by an unknown American soldier who had captured it. He wanted McCain to attach it to a bomb and send it "right back where it came from". McCain had reported that it would give Naval Aviation "great satisfaction " To return the medal. But here it is, in the original case. Also included is a spiral bound record of a trip of a tour of the Pacific fleet that occurred in late June 1945, a little more than a month before Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (front cover detached but present). There are several letters from Adm. McCain's "Dad" 19-44 and 45. Adm. McCain died in 1945. Newspaper clippings in various states of condition, ca. 1945-1952.

Most of the b/w photos are 8-1/2 in x 11 in., some smaller. Medal box is H 4 in. W 2-1/2 in. Belt buckle is H 1-3/4 in. W 2-1/2 in.

Condition

Most of the photos are in very good condition, some with a crease, some with chipped corners. Medal box with wear consistent with being in a soldier's kit bag, but overall very good. The buckle is excellent.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

 


Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
