Marc J. Matz has been a prominent antiques dealer for over forty years, specializing in works of art from the China Trade, Colonial India, the Dutch East Indies, Japanese Export, and Southeast Asia. Japanese Export, Edo Period, ca. 1800-20. Large black, brown and gold lacquer with shell inlay traveling desk. In Kyoto-Nagasaki style the rectangular top with sparse shell inlay long-tail ho-o  birds and scattered gold lacquer flowers set in diagonally alternating brownish-gold nashiji lacquer and black lacquer bands; centering a gold lacquer battle scene inside a medieval fort; the top opening to a fitted interior with a removable central tray closed with three hinged lids, decorated in gold hiramakie lacquer on a black ground depicting a continuous mountainous landscape with a pavilion and other buildings; lifted out revealing a further large storage area with two hidden integral locking compartments; mounted with a festooned copper escutcheon and side handles.

H 9 in. W 21-1/2 in. D 12-1/2 in.

Provenance: From the collection of the late Carl Crossman (China Trade scholar and author). A closely related box, now in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, was collected by Samuel Gardner Derby, captain of the ship Margaret in 1801, and is illustrated in Oliver Impey & Christian Jörg, Japanese Export Lacquer/ 1580-1850, Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam, 2005, page 325, no. 636.

Literature: For close comparison see a pair of Japanese Edo Period export lacquer traveling desks, ca. late 18th century, that were included in Export Art of China and Japan, The China Trade Sale, Christie’s, London, April 7, 1997, pps. 178-179, no. 173.

Condition: Light wear and imperfections.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

 


Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
