Tennessee Sampler wrought by Matilda Catherine "Kate" Phillips in her 12th year of age, circa 1862. Housed in a bird's eye maple frame.

Matilda was born in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1850. She was the daughter of Samuel Poole Phillips, Sr. (b. 1813) and Frances Adaline Cooper (b. 1821). Their marriage produced fifteen children in a span of twenty-three years.

Matilda Phillips later died in 1898 in Pope County, Illinois.

The sale of this lot will include a packet of genealogical information.

Frame: H 15-1/4" W 14-1/2"

Sight: H 12-1/4" W 11-1/4"

Condition: Needlework piece is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or damage noted. Frame itself is in overall good antique condition with some minor surface imperfections and old repairs to the surface noted. The top piece of the frame has been re-glued, glue between the frame joints is visibly present.

Arrangements for shipping/pickup must be made within ten business days after the auction.

Arrangement and costs of shipping are the responsibility of the buyer. 
New England Auctions does not ship or arrange shipping. 
All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items.

If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   


Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction.

Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 21 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot per day, in addition to a moving fee of $25 for items going into storage and $25 when the item is brought out of storage. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

Items not picked up within 45 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions. The default date for this auction, Summer Americana Extravaganza, will be Sept. 2, 2024.
