Needlework Sampler. This large and beautifully executed sampler was worked by Charlotte Giberson in 1818, under the tutelage of Madam Pawling in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Charlotte was born in Sunbury, PA on June 9, 1800, the daughter of Thomas and Ann Giberson. She married Michael Elder (b.1773) on April 5, 1827, a second marriage for Elder. An important piece of Pennsylvania needlework, it not only provides genealogical information on the maker, but also the name of her instructress. Stars, bells, trees, and floral imagery as well as wildlife and domestic animals. There is a small domestic scene with chairs, a table, a floral arrangement, and a dog. A woman holding a shepherd's crook. Pennsylvania. Dated 1818. This sampler is accompanied by several booklets of Giberson Geneology. Frame: H 25-1/2 W 20-3/4". Sight: H 20-1/4" W 26". Condition: Excellent condition with some light fading and light staining, mostly visible in the center. Collection of Ann Fassnacht.
