Intricate scrimshaw carved bone with seven whaling vessels and a steamship, dated 1838. Inscribed in central area 'A SEA HORSE TAKEN IN THE RED SEA A.D. 1838'. Below scenic depictions of palm trees, is a man riding a horse, bird and elephant. Central area includes an eagle holding an American shield, a camel, two horses, a dog, followed by man in corner shooting with rifle at three birds in flight. On flat reverse side; from left to right, sun above three birds in sky, three whaling skiffs with men and harpoons fishing for whales. In the middle a whaling ship with a lighthouse in the distance, an eagle with spread wings holding a shield, and two women holding American flags under the eagle. H 1-1/8" W 9-3/8" D 3-3/4".
