Rare 1693 Salem Witch Trials document. An original 1pp document (H 7-1/4" x W 4-3/4") signed by Simon Willard, a Magistrate during the trials, and two others. This is his sworn affidavit of his examination of Margaret Prince of Capan (Cape Ann, Gloucester) accused of Witchcraft. The examination took place on September 5, 1692. The Salem Witchcraft events took place between February 1692 and May 1693. This affidavit recounts the examination of Margaret Prince of Gloucester (1625-1706). In the midst of the trials, a new Grand Jury was established on January 5,1693 and they required this account from Willard, which has the same date. It is signed twice by Willard, and once by Rev. John Higginson (former pastor of the Salem Church), and Robert Payne "foreman" of the grand Jury. Others mentioned include Jno Hathorne and "Mary Warin". Prince is quoted as saying she, "...would not hurt any body for a thousand worlds." Willard says,"...some of ye afflicted sd they saw ye black man on ye table...when they could speak sd they saw a coffin...". "This is the substance of what was said to me by Margret Prince att her examination Attst Simon Willard." . Condition: Excellent condition, with minor wear from age. Extremely rare.
