ROBERT WILKINSON (1874-1955)Outsider artist, was born in Minnesota and moved westward as a young man. He found work on a sheep ranch in Wyoming, where he eventually married his boss's widow, thirty years his senior. Taking family snapshots and occasionally clipping portraits of women such as China's Madame Chiang Kai-shek from newspapers and magazines, Wilkinson paid elaborate attention to the frames around the images, incorporating visual elements from the compositions they held. He carved, painted, and decorated the frames using a range of materials from crushed seashells to volcanic ash to orange crates.
