Robert Ball Hughs (1806-1868)- A very rare wax bust miniature portrait of William Rotch, Sr. (1734-1828). In original red leather folding case.

H 6-1/4 in. W 5 in. (measurement includes case).

Provenance: Julia Wager Rodman (1835-1887), the daughter of Captain Thomas Rotch Rodman, and great great granddaughter of William Rotch. William Rotch, Sr. was unquestionably one of the most significant figures in the early history of the American whaling industry, beginning in Nantucket, and later in New Bedford. An identical version of Robert Hughs’ wax portrait of William Rotch is in the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Literature: Ethel Stanton Bolton, Wax Portraits and Silhouettes, Boston, 1915. The present wax portrait is referenced and described by Bolton (p. 74): “William Rotch Sr…called ‘the King of Nantucket’. A Quaker, wore his hat when received by Louis XVI.” By 1915, there were only nine known wax portraits by Hughs, including the present lot, which is recorded in her book. A printed ownership label affixed to the case is inscribed in ink: for Miss J. W. Rodman, 106 Spring Street New Bedford, Mass; identifying the subject as William Rotch, Sr. … father of Elizabeth - wife of Samuel Rodman.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items.  Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.   
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.

 


Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
