13 Autographs of American Politicians.
Presidents:
1) Jimmy Carter on his personal letterhead. January 29, 2007, thanking Peter Sheldon for his gift to the Carter Center. Bold signature. Fine condition, usual folds from mailing.
2) Herbert Hoover. 3 typed letters signed by Hoover to Mary Hastings Bradley (Author, Traveller), asking for her help and opinion on a book Hoover was authoring with Hugh Gibson on the nature of war and peace. One letter mentions potential migration of upland parts of Africa, specifically "Rhodesia and Kenya that could be made into white settlements without injury to the sparse negro population there". He is referencing the need for "general refuge for the oppressed...". The letters are dated April 15, 1942, June 23, 1942, and April 6, 1943. All have bold signatures of Hoover. All letters were considered confidential. The first letter is 1.5 pp, and there is a corner clipped on page 1 affecting a few typed letters. The second letter is one page, and has two clips on the bottom right, not affecting any text or signature. The third letter is 1.5 pp, and the bottom of the first page has similar clips, and just touches the edge of one typed letter. All with very slight edge darkened areas, folds, and light soiling. VG.
Vice President:
1) Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's VP. A clipped signature. np nd. Mounted to paper. Fine signature.
Senators:
4 typed letters signed from US Senators to Peter Sheldon.
January 15, 1952 from Senator Estes Kefauver (Tenn.) regarding a request for campaign buttons. Small tear at top right.
February 6, 1952 from Senator Robert Taft (Ohio) same request for campaign buttons.
April 3, 1959 from Senator Leverett Saltonstall (Mass) over Sheldon's concern for radioactive pollution from atomic weapons testing. Staple tear at top left.
January 8, 1968 from Senator Margaret Chase Smith regarding Sheldon's concern over a proposed Presidential Tax.
All four letters are in very fine condition, except where noted.
Treasury:
4 letters signed by Francis E. Spinner as Treasurer of the USA. August 10, 1866 regarding fractional currency. February 3, 1869. Spinner recommends George Pratt to be hired as General Grant's steward at the executive mansion. April 28, 1873 regarding some misplaced "coupons". October 13, 1876 regarding the publication in the "Evening Journal", of several meetings taking place in Mohawk and Herkimer. He ends the letter with " Don't let us be disappointed". All letters are in very fine condition and all signatures bold and bright.
