Important portrait of The Soldier's Free Library. Washington, D.C. Oil on canvas. Dated 1863, the year the library was given to the public for use by the Department of the Interior. Founded by Edna Barker (1842-1919). The name J.A. Fowle, engraved on the memorial stone, commemorates Edna's husband and benefactor to the library. The Soldier's Free Library was located on Judiciary Square at 5th and East Streets. Next to the Army Hospital which is also depicted in the painting. American, dated 1863. Condition: Excellent original condition. One small repair. Frame: H 19-1/2" 25-1/2". Canvas: H 14-1/4" W 20".
