Scarce, early Martina and Florentino Montoya San Ildefonso pottery jar, c 1900-1910. H 11" W 12-5/8". Martina Vigil Montoya (1856-1916) and husband and partner Florentino Montoya were ground breaking San Ildefonso potters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Maria Martinez in 1895 called Martina the finest contemporary potter of the day. Together they introduced many new techniques and materials to other potters. This pot is of the period 1900-1910 and exhibits the use of all over glaze to the underside of a pot. Although Martina and Florentino moved to Cochiti Pueblo in 1902 they continued to produce pottery in the decorative style of San Ildefonso. This pot exhibits a desirable decorated interior rim. There are two small chips to the rim and a very fine 2 inch line running beside the smaller chip. Otherwise this pot is in mint untouched condition. H 11" W 12-5/8".
