Trained in Moscow, Survage identified with the Russian avant-garde movement. He then moved to Paris where he shared a studio with Amedeo Modigliani, a famous Italian painter and sculptor. Then moving to Nice, Survage began to experiment with the abstract. This move in 1917 changed his style and his pieces became more cubist and geometric. He also began to experiment with abstract film. This piece is characteristic of Survage's work he completed while in Nice and presents the viewer with a cityscape in the form of a geometric puzzle. Survage's pieces have been exhibited internationally and 65 of his pieces are within the MoMA's collection.
