Large collection of early pamphlets and journals
To include:
1) The New England Almanac and Farmer's Friend for 1853. By Nathan Daboll. New London: 1852.
H 6-3/8" W 4-1/4".
A few tears to cover into the borders. Back wrapper is torn off at the bottom with loss (about 2/5). Some page tears.
2) Abel Curtis. A Compend of English Grammer...Fourth Edition...Norwich. Printed and Sold by John Trumbull. MDCCLXXXV. (1785). 40 pp. plus some pages added from another book. Original paper covers. Bottom corner chewed by a mouse, affecting some text. Page 37/8 with a 1/2" 2-1/2" tear on margin, with loss. A few page tears, stains. A scarce book.
H 6-1/4" W 3-3/4".
3) Cock Robin's Courtship and Marriage. New Haven: J. Babcock...Sidney's Press.-1824. Stitched book cover (worn). Hand colored woodcut illustrations. 23 pp. Original covers, under the book cover. Wear, soiling, a few stains.
H 4-1/4" W 3-1/2".
4) The Holy Bible. Published by J. Babcock & Son, Sidney's Press 1819. Original printed wraps, with additional wallpaper book cover. 36 pp. Complete.
H 5-5/8" W 3-1/2". Some damp-staining and toning.
5) One handmade journal with wallpaper cover and one case bound in leather and gilt. Handmade, stitched pamphlet, with colored pages and a wallpaper cover. Probably made by Francis Cummings of Somerset Mass 1834. 8 leaves folded in half for16 pp. (Bottom half of p.16 torn away).
H 8-1/2" W 5" Primitive, but lovely.
6) Photo Album. Published by David Felt, Stationers Hall New York and Boston. ca 1833. Engraved title and numerous full page steel engravings (printed in London and dated 1833). Moire end papers. Interspersed with colored papers throughout. Includes 2 hand-in-heart paper cutouts with hair braids. Autographs from Schenectady, NY area. Book was owned by Margaret Melinda Seely of Balston Spa. Full red leather with elaborate gilt covers, edges, dentelles, and spine. All edges gilt. Some wear to spine top, bottom, and edges. Some dampstaining and page wrinkling from moisture. Overall tight and attractive.
H 8-3/4" W 6-1/2".
6) A wonderful assemblage of 62 chapbooks from Maine to Ohio, as follows:
22 from the press of Sydney Babcock, New Haven CT.
21 from the state of New York.
8 from Massachusetts.
6 from Concord, NH.
1 Portland, Maine.
1 Providence RI.
2 Pennsylvania (1 is in German)
1 Dayton, Ohio.
Includes No. 9 of The Slave's Friend (ca 1837) from the American Anti Slavery Society. This was the first abolitionist magazine for children.
Only 2 chapbooks appear to be missing a page at the end (last pp number is 6). Some lack wrappers, but most are complete. Some with hand stitched reinforced spines. Some in wallpaper style covers. All with woodcut illustrations. See photos for details.
Smallest: H 3" W 1-3/4".
Largest: H 5-1/4" W 3-1/2".
Condition: Varies, but mostly considered very good.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items. Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items.
If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction.
Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 21 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot per day, in addition to a moving fee of $25 for items going into storage and $25 when the item is brought out of storage. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.
Items not picked up within 45 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions. The default date for this auction, Summer Americana Extravaganza, will be Sept. 2, 2024.
