A cluster of 14 rose-cut diamonds, approx. 1.15 cts surround a central diamond, approx. 3.15 cts in a closed-back setting. Circa 1860. 14K yellow gold and silver top ring. Engraved No. 96 N 3.15K 14st. 1.15K Center diamond is 12.8mm X 9.6mm. Ring size 6. Total weight including stones: 5.6 dwt.This may be one of the rose-cut diamonds that was once among a set of diamond buttons owned by Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, overthrown and executed in 1867. Twelve of these buttons were acquired by Col. Edward H. R. Green, son of the financier Hetty Green.  When Edward Green a collector of coins, stamps and jewelry died in 1936, his collections were sold privately and at auction. Hammer Galleries acquired jewelry from Green’s collection, including the set of 12 rose-cut diamonds, mounted as finger rings.
