Oil on canvas painting of hunters in a forest signed W.V. Shaw and dated 1864 Large folk art oil painting (24" by 26.5 ") depicting a pair of hunters in a dark and foreboding forest. Shotguns in hand and dogs at their side, the pair have successfully landed a ten-point buck. The naive style of the painting underscores the unnatural formality of the men with their perfect neckties and caps in contrast rugged and untamed landscape. The piece is signed W.V. Shaw and dated 1864. Measurements Framed: 28" wide, 31" tall. Canvas alone: 24 " wide, 26.5" tall Condition: The painting displays well. The canvas is rippled but stable. It was apparently professionally stabilized on the stretcher edges at some point long ago, the reverse showing several old patches, the paint itself showing craquelure. Several of the photographs here may show the canvas slightly lighter than it appears in person. The frame itself appears to be original and is chipped in several places.
