Needlework sampler, Delia Holcomb, circa 1806. New England.
Provenance: Fidelia (Delia) Holcomb was born on the 8th of August 1795, in Granby Connecticut. She was the sixth generation Holcomb to be born in America and a direct descendent of Thomas Holcomb who was born in England in 1605 and died in Windsor Connecticut in 1657. There are conflicting reports about whether or not he sailed for the New World on the Mary and John or aboard the Thunder, but by 1634 it is well documented that he lived in the Puritan community of Dorchester, a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Two years later, he joined Rev. John Wareham’s group and along with his wife Elizabeth Holcomb, moved to Salmon Brook, now Windsor, Connecticut founding that town and later Granby nearby. Thomas was among those who drafted The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in Hartford which is considered a prototype for the United States Constitution.
Fidelia is descended from Thomas’s son Nathaniel, Nathaniel II, Nathaniel III, then David ( born 1696) , Reuben (born 1725) and finally, her father Nahum (born 1763) who married Rebecca Moore of nearby Westfield, MA in 1789. Fidelia was their second surviving child and she was born in 1795. She married Deacon Chester Hayes (another descendant of Connecticut’s first families) in 1815. She had eight children, 7 girls and a son Milo Emerson, before she died in 1843. Descendants of the Holcomb family and the Hayes family continue to live in the Simsbury Granby area.
Both Fidelia’s father and grandfather served in the American Revolution. Fidelia’s male ancestors have served in every colonial conflict including the Indian wars, the War of 1812, and four lost their lives in the American Civil War, one at Andersonville prison.
Fidelia’s black background sampler is strongly reminiscent of the Norwich samplers of the late 18th century done about 10 years before her own. These samplers have a strong tradition in the Connecticut River Valley, Western Massachusetts, and Norwich. Connecticut.
