A very large collection of letters and documents spanning the years 1777 - 1865. Civil War: Four official partially printed discharge documents. Two are for George Durant (1862/65) who fought for CT and NY. Two for Edward Durant, 1863/65, CT Veteran Volunteers. Both Durand's were born in New York. Two promotions for Charles Durant, one to Corporal and one to Sergeant. Probably a brother to the other two. H 10" W 15" and H 11" W 8-1/2". Condition: Two documents with cello tape repairs. All with normal age wear, soiling, folds, edge tears, but all still quite presentable. One Civil War letter from Harmer S Nichols to his brother, dated Annapolis Camp Brunswick January 21st 1862. Impressive letterhead in red, white, and blue. Letter with interesting content. H 8" W 5". Condition: Soiled and worn, but completely legible. Folds, with some minor splits. Very Good. One notice from David Miler, Camp Terry, New Haven, CT dated Sept. 12th 1862, To the Selectmen of Ridgefield, about a soldier (unnamed) rejected by the surgeon John W Mead. The notice comes with two envelopes. both addressed to Mrs. Almon E Hamlin. One is a pale pink envelope with a New Haven postage cancellation Sept.27 (may be for the notice). Stamp has been mostly torn away. The second has cancellation stamp dated Jan. 23 1863. Notice is H 4-3/8" W 7-3/4". Envelopes: H 2-5/8" W 4-5/8". One Civil War era copper, hinged, document or map(?) holder. H 6-3/4" W 3-3/4" D 1/2". Condition: Excellent Original Condition. Collection of 26 letters from the Nixon Family from Framingham Mass. area, 1840's and 1850"s. Mostly between sisters, some friends, and 5 schoolgirl essays by Marcella Nixon. All in very good, readable condition. Group of misc. receipts dating from 1777 - later 19th century. Mid 19th century re-print of The Ulster County Gazette for January 4, 1800, the first newspaper to cover the death of Washington. With some tears and paper discoloration. Book, Vol 3 (only) of The Works of Alexander Pope, ca 1770. 8vo. Front cover missing, signature of George Couper, 1805. Partially printed document, Pennsylvania, 1779, a marriage contract between Matthew Brown and Mary Bickerton. Witnessed by James Trimble H 13" W 7-1/2" Condition: All in Very Good or better condition, except as noted.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items. Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.
Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
