Cheney Family inlaid cherrywood racquet back side chair, Connecticut,. ca.1800. Chapin workshop attribution. Rarely encountered in America beyond the Philadelphia / Annapolis area, the Sheraton inspired "raquet-back" chair is always uncommon. This rare example, in cherrywood, descended directly from the notable Cheney Family of Manchester, Ct. In this remarkable local rendition, Elephalet Chapin's Philadelphia training & influence is apparent. Cherrywood with light wood pattern & string inlay. Seat corner block; eastern white pine. Fine estate condition, old or original surface. By direct descent, Cheney Family, Ct. H 36".
