A rare Scottish Burmese-style silver hot water jug, maker’s mark Henry Stratford, Glasgow, Scotland, 1889, with retailer’s mark on the underside: Edward & Sons Glasgow & London. An extraordinary cross-cultural production: a fine, richly adorned hot water jug with twelve repoussé figures and animals of the Zodiac inside cartouches — a design closely adapted from Shan silverware of Burma. Numerous concentric decorative scrolling incised bands fill the polished body below the cartouches, as well as above, leading to a hinged top with foliate pattern bands, and a turned knob finial. The cross-cultural Shan-inspired design for this jug, was very likely the result of the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888, which included extensive bazaar-like displays of Burmese and Anglo-Indian silver. Comparison: A closely related Scottish Hot Water Jug of Anglo-Indian Style, likely by the same maker, is part of a four-piece tea service, illustrated and discussed in Vidya Dehejia, Delight in Design - Indian Silver for the Raj, 2008, pps. 94-97, where the Indian silver scholar Wynyard Wilkinson suggests that the high grade Scottish silver in the Shan-Burmese style, was in fact “made by a single source and then sold by various smart retail establishments…”
