A truly wonderful copy of the first edition of Alfred Guernsey's and Henry Alden's seminal two-volume chronicle of the War between the States. Vol. 1 published 1866 and Vol. 2 published 1868. 836 pp. elephant folio (H 16-3/8" x W 12" x D 2-3/4"). Except for several small minor edge tears, the contents are very clear and perfectly "age mellowed". Folding colored map of the Southern States is present (near fine with 2 small edge tears and a small tear or two at the interior fold). The original pebble cloth bindings are a lovely orange-brown, with only traces of edge wear at the spine tips and corners. One would be very hard-pressed to find a better copy of this two-volume set.
